The 2017 BelFlex Junior Mentoring Program has been completed for Marshall High School with a formal graduation ceremony for students that took place on June 7. Designed to encourage young people to stay in school and graduate, the program also provided the students with essential professional skills needed to gain meaningful employment.

“The BelFlex Junior Mentoring Program is bridging the gap between school and the real world by teaching the students soft skills such as how to conduct themselves in an interview. Skills like this will give the students the confidence they need whether they go on for additional training or directly into the workforce,” said Rick Pearce, President, Middletown Chamber of Commerce. “We are proud to support BelFlex as they seek to connect Marshall High School students with potential career opportunities.”

Local volunteers worked with Chuck Hall, Principal of Marshall High School, to provide valuable guidance and mentoring to the junior and senior students that participated in the eight-week program. They focused on a range of job search techniques including how to write a resume, fill out an application and dress professionally.

The highlight of the experience was a mock interview event on May 31 where each student put their skills to the test by rotating through a series of interviews with local business and community leaders, and chamber members. In total, volunteers conducted over 48 real world interviews with the students.

The experience was also gratifying for BelFlex with John Murlin, Business Development Manager of BelFlex stating “The program is about more than helping a community, it is about shaping young adults for the business world right out of high school and our goal is to help every student obtain an entry level job.” Amanda Vaughn, Team Leader of BelFlex added, “Every day we see the need to guide and teach young people the small things that will set them apart and we believe the BelFlex Junior Mentoring program will help them stand out. We feel very grateful to be part of this experience and hope one day these students will pass the lessons they have learned onto the next generation.”
